LinkedIn Banner Size
1584 × 396 at 4:1 is the LinkedIn profile banner size — a strip wider than any other profile header on a major platform. The height is only 396 px, and part of that is covered by your own profile photo, so the usable area for a message is smaller than the canvas suggests.

What size is a LinkedIn banner?
1584 px wide and 396 px tall reduces to 4:1. Four units across for every one down is very close to a letterbox crop, which is why banner artwork usually has to be designed rather than cropped from an existing photograph.
LinkedIn's file cap is 8 MB, so weight is not the constraint. The constraint is that there is almost no height to work with: two lines of text at a comfortable size will occupy most of the 396 px, leaving little room for a background that still reads as an image.
LinkedIn image sizes across the product
LinkedIn uses three quite different shapes — a 4:1 strip for the profile, a very wide 5.9:1 strip for company pages, and 1.91:1 or 1:1 in the feed.
| Placement | Pixels | Ratio | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Profile banner | 1584 × 396 | 4:1 | Profile photo overlaps the lower left |
| Company page cover | 1128 × 191 | about 5.9:1 | The logo overlaps the left edge |
| Feed image, landscape | 1200 × 627 | 1.91:1 | Matches a shared link's card |
| Feed image, square | 1200 × 1200 | 1:1 | Holds up best across mobile and desktop |
| Article cover | 1920 × 1080 | 16:9 | Used for published articles and newsletters |
| Profile photo | 400 × 400 | 1:1 | Minimum 200 × 200, displayed as a circle |
How to fit a message into a 4:1 strip
The arithmetic here is less about the calculator and more about the budget of vertical pixels. Working out the height first tells you immediately whether your copy will fit.
- Take the recommended width of 1584 px and divide by 4: one unit is 396 px.
- Because the ratio is 4:1, the height is that unit once over — 396 px, which confirms the canvas.
- Allow roughly 120 px at the bottom for the profile photo and its overlap, leaving about 276 px of clear height.
- At a comfortable reading size a single line of text occupies about 40 px, so plan for at most three lines in the clear band.
- Export at 1584 × 396 and check the crop on a narrow window before publishing.
Worked example
Suppose your strapline is 60 characters and you want it on one line. At 1584 px wide you have room for roughly 45 characters at a size that is still readable on mobile. The honest options are to shorten the strapline or to split it over two lines inside the 276 px clear band — shrinking the type until 60 characters fit on one line produces text that is illegible at phone width.
Your own profile photo is the obstacle
The profile picture sits on the boundary between the banner and the rest of the profile card, overlapping the lower-left corner of the banner. On the company page the logo does the same thing on the left edge. Any text placed there is hidden by an element you control but cannot move.
The second consideration is that the banner is very short while the photo is not. A 4:1 strip with a circular photo intruding into it leaves a usable message area that is noticeably smaller than 1584 × 396, and the intrusion is worse on narrow screens where the banner is displayed at a reduced width.
- Keep the left 300 px of the banner free of text; that is where the photo lands.
- Put the strapline in the upper band, level with the top of the photo rather than beside it.
- Do not rely on a photograph with a lot of vertical subject matter — at 396 px tall most of it will be cropped away.
- Check the banner on a phone as well as a desktop, because the crop and the photo position both shift.
Banner limits
Plan around the height and the photo overlap. File size and format will not stop you.
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Recommended size | 1584 × 396 px |
| Aspect ratio | 4:1 |
| Maximum file size | 8 MB |
| Accepted formats | JPG, PNG, GIF |
| Profile photo overlap | Lower left of the banner |
| Practical text zone | Upper two thirds of the strip |
LinkedIn Profile banner size FAQ
Why is part of my banner hidden behind my photo?
Because LinkedIn draws the profile picture over the lower-left corner of the banner. That overlap is fixed by the layout, so the lower-left area is unusable for anything you expect people to read.
Can I use the same image for my profile banner and my company page?
Only if you re-crop it. The company cover is 1128 × 191, which is about 5.9:1 — considerably wider and shorter than the 4:1 profile banner. The same file cannot serve both without either being stretched or losing its ends.
What is a good size for a LinkedIn post image?
1200 × 627 at 1.91:1 for anything that will unfurl as a link card, and 1200 × 1200 for a standalone image post. The square holds up better because it is not re-cropped between the mobile and desktop feeds.
Should the banner contain my job title?
It usually should not. The headline field directly beneath the banner already carries the job title and is indexed by search, so repeating it in the image wastes the small amount of height you have.
